For the homepage of some portals I have made: * Blog rollup from in-house blogs. Using the content query WebPart and a custom itemstyle to rollup SharePoint blogs. * 2-day weather forecast of all the company's office locations with icons and temperature high and lows. Consuming an external XML file from a weather bureau and formatting it with a dataview WebPart.
