It seems more likely that your custom template is missing the requiried content placeholders.

However the navigation is not right, I have done some digging online and found an example but I couldn't seem to get it to apply to my code, I was wondering if someone can help fix up the navigation with the code required for whats above? i.e. the breadcrumbs are absent, and so is the top navigation bar for the portal.
