It is not a solution for attachments - but for uploading to another document
library and adding the link to a link field in your list item

Subject: [OzMOSS] Automatic URL discovery for uploaded attachments

Hi all,

A quick question regarding lists. Given that the upload path is set by the list
and the ID is readily available, is there a no-nonsense way to customise an
"attachment" field so that end users can browse for an image locally, upload
it, and auto-discover that URL in a display template to have an image go with
your announcement?

rgds,

Paul
