I've done some more experimantation and there are a couple of points of clarifications about this which I feel are important for anyone else attempting to manage sites this way:
- The Sites list within the Site Driectory site does manage the sites list. But this list is empty by default (with the exception of the Setup MySite top task) and it is only populated if you selected categories for your site at the time of creation. - To add categories to sites after creation you need to manually add them to this list. - If you relocate your content within sitemanager.aspx then the URLs for any content within the Sites list also gets updated. Nice. - You can add custom columns to this list to do some pretty cool cross-grouping of content that has nothing to do with your actual site structure. Very nice. Apologies again to those for which this information seems obvious but in the absence of any official documentation perhaps this'll save someone else all the time I've already spent on this. Update the item there and you should be set. The Add Link to site page just adds an item to this list. Normally sites are added to the list when the site is created. Does the Add Link to Site tab on the Site Directory's category.aspx page achieve the same result?
