The entire office integration platform, utilizing VSTO. It's all dev centric.
You can use InfoPath to create/edit the DIP, with little or no code and have
the ability for dev stuff later. It is much easier to make calls with the built
in InfoPath controls (User, Membership, Roles, etc...) and retain the ability
for custom controls to put losts of functionality into the DIP to collect
metadata or assist in filling in templates. (IMHO:) Not to mention the Office
XML as well.

As in asp.net code behind? Why would it behave differently whether in a browser
or a browser that’s embedded within the DIP?

Two words...Code Behind....that's why.

I always wondered why Microsoft didn’t consider using embedded IE for the DIP
rather than infopath. Taking zones and all that sort of crap out of the
equation, would have meant the DIP should work with custom fields.

This tends to be a showstopper for many of the 3rd part solutions that are
great for lists but do not translate particularly well to document library
scenarios

Information Panel and Custom Fields

I am in the process of writing my Tech.Ed presentation about custom fields, but
here are the cons:
      Does not integrate with Office
      Not working with datasheet view
Complex data structure may be hard to integrate into things like filters,
grouping, search, and querying

Does that help?

However, I never played with a DIP, so it may be possible by writing some
custom code – but I remain sceptic.
