The answer is quite simple – Microsoft /do/ support the PPS file extension. They don’t however include it as a default file type inclusion. Content will only be crawled if it’s extension exists in the file-type inclusions list *and* there is an IFilter available for it. Because it’s actually a PPT, an IFilter does exist for it, which means you only need to include it in the file type inclusion list.
