1. If you create a Distributed Applications Project from New Projects Menu it allows you to add diagrams before adding project
2. Even though you can create diagrams in pretty much any sequence, for a new solution the sequence would be LD, AD, SD 3. You have option not create LD and that is the reason VS doesn't force you to have one type of diagram to have another type. Even if my solution is in one zone I would create LD, because I define constraints right from the beginning and later you can allow more zone to be added. Hope that Helps.
