Grant (and list),
This is one of the best things i've read in recent
weeks/months (probably after the release of the latest tfs) with regards
to TFS. Very kewl and VERY helpful. You're so right about the fact that
the build stuff has been neglected big time. It's all well and good,
building applications, but trying to deploy an application is (more or
less) the final hurdle in the application process and if that is not
automated and simple, then things can get very messy, very quickly ...
especially when it comes to supporting the live product. Lets not get
started about supporting a live web application in a web farm scenario
on remove servers ....
Anyways ... is there a way people can REQUEST build
recipes? For example; i'd love to see a way to MINIFY and PACK my
javascript files before the web site is deployed .. so if i can add that
to a 'request' list, maybe someone else might be able to help? ... Maybe
a windows application developer might want to obfuscate their code,
during deployment? This ties in to my next question ...
TFS Builds and web deployment projects. Would it be fair
to assume that these two products have a close relationship (with regard
to web applications, that is) and maybe add some recipe support for WDP
also? Eg. Using TFS build with WDP doing the following build scenarios
... etc. I'm not sure if the two recipies 'Deploying Web Apps to IIS' or
'Zip web app files' are doing this, because those links don't work for
me.
Cheers - looking forward to everyone's thoughts :)

Subject: [OzTFS] TFSBuild.com Build Receipes Launched
Hi OzTFS'ers,
Here's a little side project I've been working on: TFSBuild.com
<http://www.tfsbuild.com/>
http://ozgrant.com/2008/01/31/tfsbuildcom-build-recipes-launched/
As a Build Master you've been put in charge of coming up with a central
build system for your team. It can be quite daunting at first and you
wonder "Where do I start?".
The purpose of TFSBuild.com <http://www.tfsbuild.com/> is to create and
share build recipes with other build masters so that we can all learn
and benefit from each other's experience.
Since the site is called TFSBuild.com <http://www.tfsbuild.com/> , there
is a particular focus on MSBuild and Team Foundation Build scripts. But
if you have a NAnt <http://nant.sourceforge.net/> script or similar
that you think others might find useful post it up.
The site is published as a wiki and the idea is that anybody can
register <http://www.tfsbuild.com/Register.aspx> to add & update
content.
There are four simple options to get started:
1. Browse existing build recipes
<http://www.tfsbuild.com/BuildRecipes.ashx>
2. Add a new build recipe
<http://www.tfsbuild.com/AddBuildRecipe.ashx>
3. Use the search <http://www.tfsbuild.com/Search.aspx?FullText=1>
4. Subscribe to the RSS feed of wiki updates
<http://www.tfsbuild.com/RSS.aspx> .
It's a little light on content at the moment, but I'm hoping that will
change as momentum builds. Spread the word! Here are some of the recipes
that I've put up recently based on my own experiences:
* Running Unit Tests without a Test List
<http://www.tfsbuild.com/Running%20Unit%20Tests%20without%20a%20Test%20L
ist.ashx>
* WiX MSI Setup Package
<http://www.tfsbuild.com/WiX%20MSI%20Setup%20Package.ashx>
* .NET 1.1 Applications
<http://www.tfsbuild.com/NetFX_11_Applications.ashx>
* Restrict Target Framework Version
<http://www.tfsbuild.com/Restrict%20Target%20Framework%20Version.ashx>
