So this works across the board, regardless of project as fields are
global. That's good to know, Thanks William.

In 2005 you can delete fields:

I think there have been improvements in regards to this in 2008. I
believe you can delete Work Item Types, not sure about individual fields
though.

Adam

Thanks Adam,

Has this changed in TFS 2008? I will look forward to the upgrade then.

Cheers,

Raj

Hi Raj,

As far as I know, with TFS 2005 there is no way to delete a field or
change a field's data type once it's been added to a Work Item.

Your only option would be to create a new field and use the new field
instead (keeping the old field definition as well).

Rgds,

Adam

Subject: [OzTFS] Changing WIT field type

Hi,

I have a custom field of type="String" in one of our Work Item Templates
and being used for a while now. But, because of the length limitation of
string fields I wanted to change it to HTML (so that I can have rich
text as well).

But when I try to change the field type on the template I am getting the
'Error: TF26038: Field type for <field1> does not match the existing
type. It was String, but now is HTML' error.

I tried to add another HTML field (field2) and tried to set the DEFAULT
as the field1's value. But I get 'TF26048: The rule 'DEFAULT' for
'<field2>' refers to '<field1>', which is a different field type. Change
the field type or field reference so that the field referred to is the
same type and try again.

I tried to delete the field1 using 'witfields.exe' so I can upload the
updated template but I get '<field1> cannot be deleted - It is used by
the following project(s): .........'

Is there any ways around this problem?

Thank you.

Cheers,

Raj
