I've been pondering something recently and I want to pose a question to you all... Do you run unit tests on your build machine? I've always been paranoid about doing this because you don't have that much control over what code a developer writes in their unit test. While you can limit the damage that can be done by running your builds as a non-privileged user and using ACLs to restrict what the user can do, there is still the issue of stability, unit tests filling the hard drive with temporary files, launching processes and not cleaning them up and the like. I've looked at a few solutions: 1. When the build completes queue the unit tests to run on another machine. At least this way the build machine is maintained in a clean state and it's only the unit test machine that is affected. 2. Run the unit tests in a virtual machine, at the end of the test run rollback the virtual machine to the previous state. 3. Go nuts with ACLs and CAS to ensure unit tests can't do anything bad. Is this something that bothers you? Am I just being pedantic? If it was easier to run your unit tests in a protected sandbox would you? Are you using any of these solutions?
