I do not accept "IM chat" spelling unless it is in their journal entry that 
only they will be reading.  I do not believe we are doing any favors by 
allowing "he wuz n skool" or "i'm goin 2 da mall" in papers handed in to be 
evaluated for writing quality.  Content 'counts' more with me, surely, but I 
take one point off for every spelling mistake (up to 10 max), whether the 
mistake is 'legitimate' or shorthand ("b/c").  I don't go on and on, but 
make it clear that how they talk with friends is not acceptable in the 
business world - and their business is learning traditional, conventional 
English.
