When I was a kid, oh, about 40 years ago, I read The Count of Monte Cristo,
The Three Musketeers, and a few others via "Classics Illustrated." I
believe we called them comic books back then, but there was nothing 'comic'
about them. I honestly have never to this day read the 'real' version of
Count of Monte Cristo but would tell you it is an excellent book and hope my
students read it some day. To that end, I ordered 4-5 copies each of
Kidnapped; 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea; and Journey to the Center of the
Earth in graphic novel format. The teacher in me says "but they should be
reading "real books" but the kid in me remembers that I was drawn into the
characters, plot, and language.
