I am in the process of using the "I Am" Poem earlier submitted by 3
colleagues here with my 7th and 8th grade Lang. Arts students. Thanks
so Much! The students are really using the line prompts to dig deep and
produce interesting perspectives into their lives and thoughts. My 7th
graders will be writing a memoir, so I'm using the poem as a segue into
that; and my 8th graders will be writing a personal essay. Before we
started the poem, we first used Nancie's Atwell's idea about "Heart
Mapping" from her book Lessons That Change Writers. This is a heart
drawn on paper where students write all the important ideas in their
lives: memories for 7th grade and strong opinions for 8th grade. The
sequencing from one lesson to the other has been seemless and has helped
the students begin to see themselves as more in depth individuals.

And besides that... writing the poem is fun.

Thanks again,
