I have been reading many of the conversations on this e-mail chain for
months. I am hoping to become a more active participant. This question
is an easy entry point for me, since Esperanza Rising used to be on our
summer reading list for sixth grade. The students had a choice of books
to read, and had to write an essay in September. Here is our essay
question for this book.

Esperanza Rising

The zigzag stitch that Abuelita taught Esperanza used stitches up to the
top of the mountain, down to the bottom of the valley, and back up the
mountain again. How does this pattern reflect Esperanza's life
throughout the book? Give some specific examples to support your
answer.

Hi!

I've actually never taught this, but I did come across a Yale student's

paper on her "Esperanza Rising" unit at

http://www.yale.edu/ynhti/curriculum/units/2006/2/06.02.10.x.html

Perhaps it will be helpful - it certainly looked intriguing on first

glance. If nothing else, it seems to have a good listing of resources
for

teachers and students.

Take care,
