I am careful to not recommend Silent to the Bone to a sixth grader without
first speaking to the student's parents. I have not read the book, but several
of my colleagues have, and they note that there is a questionable relationship
between a middle school boy and his slightly older, female babysitter.

A mystery that would be great for sixth graders is Silent to the Bone by E.L.
Konisburg. Small picture book mysteries are those by Chris Van Allsburg. I am
using his books next week to teach mystery writing. His pictures in Harris
Burdick stir some great stories with an enigmatic twist.
