I like our teachers to think more deeply about the characteristics of text, rather than the numbers, letters or levels that are assigned to them. I think that relying on any leveling system is pretty much a crutch, with the possiblity of doing more damage than good. In the white F & P book, there is a good section on differentiating text--thinking deeply about the supports that the texts provide but in all honesty--the deep consideration and knowing of children is far more important to the process, IMO.
