My seventh grade year was an exercise in misery.  The school was rough and 
tough and I was a suburban marshmallow.  The 
library was my refuge and the librarian my heroine.  I volunteered there, more 
avoidance than altruism, believe me.  And as 
we shelved books this wise and knowing woman would say to me, "You know, the 
school board is considering banning this 
book,"  or "This is one the PTA wants pulled."  No more, no less.  I read them 
all, furtively--clearly forbidden fruit.  She 
opened doors I would never have reached for by pulling them closed!  Long live 
the subversives say I!
