I love using reading logs but it's good for you to mix up the types of activities that you choose to use in them. Dialogical notebooks are a great way for them to become more interactive. Students read, select or react to certain selections in text, then pass to a partner to have read and respond to. Also, provide students with open-ended questions to respond to in their journals so they can get experiences with all times of responding....visualizing, connecting, predicting, noticing, inferring, etc.
As you can see it can also become a wonderful assessment tool inorder to determine future focusfor instruction for students who show weakness in certain areas. And of course, as we must grade, it could be used as a grading element along w/ homework and tests/quizzes. In CT we are beginning CMT's next week which will be grueling for most students/teachers. We will begin our countdown on Monday and then we are planning a bowling trip to be enjoyed by all who deserve it. alice -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Lucinda Marcello Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2007 12:42 PM To: A list for improving literacy with focus on middle grades. Do you use reading logs or any other way to motivate reading inside and outside the class room? Thank you.
