How about setting a purpose for reading?

>From Cris Tovani's book "I Read It But I Don't Get It" - page 24-26 "Purpose
is Everything" - Paraphrasing: The passage is about 2 boys who skipped
school to go to one of their houses. This boy gives a tour of the house.
After all have read the paragraphs, they are to circle what they think is
important. Then they use a colored highlighter with the direction to mark
what a thief would find important. Then a different highlighter with what a
prospective home buyer might think is important.

It's important to establish a purpose for reading, since as readers we take
different things away from what we read.
