Hello-
As a first year literacy instructor, I just wanted to chime in. My
job/role does require that I work with the staff, all of them, on my team. I
do
model lessons, help with planning, offer advice, help with testing, help with
classroom setup, classroom management, etc. I did not expect to get in to all
of the classrooms the first year, however, it will be required that they
meet with me at least 3 times a quarter next year. I have hear the " I have
taught longer, I don't need you" as well. I don't take it personally. I
agree,
they have taught longer, they do know a lot, but I know a lot too. I truly
see it as another teacher to talk about what is working with students and
what is not working they way they see it. I am not making judgements-not
ever.
I am a partner, a friend, another colleague who has the time and energy to he
lp. I am there to offer help not tell them what to do or what I might deem
as wrong. My first encounter with teachers is to build a relationship of
trust and communication-I am not evaluating them or telling the administration
what I see is wrong with them. I know the teachers are wonderful, hard
working people-I would be very upset if they thought I was there to judge
them. I
hope that those of you who coach feel the same way and those of you who have
coaches have someone you can trust. Use us, that is what we are hired for.
Trust me, I learn from teachers every day and then I get to share the
wonderful things I see with others. To me, it is a win-win situation for the
school
and the staff.
As far as "prizes"-I say to each his own. That is the beauty of teaching-if
we were all doing the exact same thing we would be nothing but cookie cutter
educators. Some teachers love it and some hate it-again, who are we to
judge them?? If it is good for the kids, then let it be. I know I love a
little
pat on the back or incentive once in a while...good for motivating me even
as an adult.
Bretta
