Two come to mind: "The Mouthful" and "The Escape." The Mouthful is a
little off color, but my 6th graders and 7th graders loved it. The Escape
is about a prisoner in solitary who attempts an escape with a gruesome
twist at the end. I don't know if they are available on-line. I got them
from a Scolastic Book: Read-Aloud Anthology, by Janet Allen and Patrick
Daley. The stories are listed as Grades 5 & Up. If you don't find them
and are still interested in using them at a later date let me know. I use
bothe these stories to practice kids predictinf and questioning
strategies.
