I teach 6, 7/8th grade integrated Language Arts/Social Studies. I have been teaching this way for many years.I have 2 hour blocks. I use my social studies content to drive the curriculum in the form of inquiry study with guiding and essential questions. I use reading strategies to guide my students in transaction with the text. I use a mixture of original sources, non-fiction and lit studies.
For example; I teach ancient civilizations the guiding questions are: Why do we bother to study/examine the past? what is a sustainable civilization? How do civilizations endure (or not) over time? Feel free to email me off list if you have further questions.
