i just listened to the podcast by kelly gallagher, and he is right on. the idea of using an article each week to build background knowledge sounds great. you know, it might also be good to work with the science or social studies teachers, and let them choose an article relating to something they will begin teaching. social studies would probably be the best option, since our kids don't have much information about the next county, much less the u.s. or the world. i probably don't even have to mention that choosing an article a week will help students learn to read informational texts, which is a big part of our GA standards.
