You can probably check out from your public library the professional literature 
by Grant & Wiggins, Understanding by Design. I found it interesting, but a very 
dense read - I was very glad there was a book talk ongoing or I might not have 
made it through the book. It sure made understanding grow by leaps and bounds 
in planning units though. My district bought into a canned program that 
utilized backwards design to plan out our curriculum maps. It nice to already 
understand the process and see that it made sense, on top of which, it does get 
easier to do. With most things, practice makes it easier (although I don't 
think it will ever be perfect - I too have a hard time following the whole 
curriculum map from beginning to end). The district's plan was most certainly 
was pricey - good effort, poor way to invest $$ for the district.?
