I am a Consultant teacher. At our school we offered French, Spanish and
Latin. A few of my students chose Latin and so I pushed in with them. They
all struggled with the Latin as to gender for verbs, nouns and adjectives.
I had studied French so I was learning along with them. I could see where
there were a lot of cognates and they would be helpful, but there was a lot
of confusion on the part of the students as there were also many words that
appeared to be cognates, but were not close enough in meaning. It didn't
help that the teacher took ill and missed many days. She died mid-year and
the school could not find a Latin teacher to take over. We ended up
starting a half year Spanish class. The kids and parents were not happy.
The French and Latin classes were for high school credit and the Spanish
wasn't. We no longer offer Latin.
