Hello Caroline and All, I just finished reading about the 5R for restructuring independing reading, and it just what I needed to jump-start my re-entry to reading (and writing) workshop. Last year I put aside my workshop methods to follow our district's adoption of the SpringBoard English curriculum (from College Board). The curriculum is loaded with best practices, but it is not driven by student choice, and student choice in my opinion is the biggest motivator for kids in language arts.
Like others on the list have already written, there wasn't a whole lot that was new in this article, but the section on research that supports IR will come in handy if I ever need it. I'm going to follow their R5 Overview, and I'm looking forward to using mini lessons and the end of class discussion to teach the five strategies of connecting, predicting, questioning, summarizing, and visualizing. The authors said they developed "six-week metacognitive units of study on [the] five strategies." QUESTION: Are these units available somewhere? Have they published a book? I'm not a reading major, and I have a couple of texts I can use to develop the mini-lessons, but if it's already out there, I'd love to know.
