We have been in school for two weeks already. I teach six 7th grade English classes. Because of all the new inrollments and the usual unbalencing of students in the core classes of math and ELA, we have had to shuffle and re-balence classes so that tomorrow will be the 2nd official first day of school. During the last 2 weeks I have getting baseline assessment information. Our ELA text is Holt and there is a beginning of the year assessment. While it is long, tedious, ponderous, rediculous, I did pare it down to 5 assessments that I gave each of the first 5 days: Capitalization / Punctuation, Fiction Comprehension and Vocabulary, Vocabulary, Non-fiction Comprehension and Vocabulary, and finally Sentence Structure. Non of the assessments was longer than 30 minutes or 10 questions. Last week I had all my classes write a first essay on "School Stories" about their positive and negative experiences in school, how they learn best and what goals they had for this year. These assessments coupled with their CST scores helped the office to place students in Honors, Core or Core + classes. I know more about their writing skills and found that grammar usage still remains the 'weakest link.' Hope this helps.
