In my AIS group, there are reluctant readers.? However, I have books, and I
have quick writes responses to those books.? Also,?I have them take a short
10-question quiz on their respective books as well as a recommendation rubric.?
Additionally, in the classroom, I place a?"Wall of Fame" chart and?display
students names after they have completely read and successfully quizzed on the
book.??Once they?passed the quiz, their names?goes up with a?positive comment,
and students look to see how many times they are on the list.? As 6th graders,
they want to "beat" their last month's chart which remains on the wall.?
Students read in class quietly for 20-25 minutes daily.?

Bill,

What do you do to encourage reading for middle school students at home and
in class? Do you have reading logs for your students or how do you encourage
reading & responding? I am wondering how valid they are after our first
quarter. We have been using them in our middle school. Some students have
really embraced it, saying they are reading more, others are lying, and
others refuse to do it which tanks their grade.

I respect your feedback and would welcome any ideas you may have
implemented.

Thanks you.
