Sharon Creech's Wanderer would be really accessible for that age group, 
and many kids really like it.  It rotates among three authors.

I've also read Avi's Never Mind about boy/girl twins at different 
schools.  It's very funny, almost slapstick.  Even though the kids are 
older, there's nothing at all inappropriate.
