I think teaching the various strategies to figure out the meaning of words
using morphology and context clues is one of the most authentic ways that a
student can come across the definition of a word independently. I have a
hard time using dictionaries in my classroom as well because most times the
definition simply repeats another form of the word, or the definition uses
words that are way too advanced for the students. If students are truly
aware of how to use the context clues they will be successful on their own
without the teacher’s constant aid which is a goal for us educators!
