Oh, they're absolutely linked, no question. That's why we created the block. This breaking apart is only in name, to better help everyone, kids and teachers alike, understand that these are both courses to be taught....too often the writing gets shortshrift, and many teachers realize too late, such as at test time, that not enough instruction in writing has occurred, nor enough time spent writing. We're thinking that giving it its own focus in the block might help.
