I'm hearing all the talk about literacy in the content areas and I just want
to share what happened at our middle school this year. I'm a reading teacher
and like all of you the LA teachers had been screaming for years about
reading and writing being everyone's job. Well, last year my district decided
to
eliminate half the language arts program for our 6th graders, they used to have
2
periods of LA a day and decided to go to having literacy coaches who would
work with the content teachers. They also cut LA time elsewhere as now the
content areas would be picking up some of the slack. This resulted in one
teacher
being transferred to the HS, another to one of our elementary schools and me
being moved to AIS (remedial reading and math). So be careful what you wish
for because this did not play out the way any of us thought it would.
