Both my 6th & 7th grade classes are in the process of starting research projects. Instead of writing a traditional research paper, however, I am having my students create functional documents. Sixth graders will be creating a travel brochure highlighting a geographical feature of Ancient China and points of interest around that site. My 7th graders will write a 2-page newsletter about a significant African-American event. I know they have written ad nauseum biographical reports about famous people, so I wanted them to approach Black History Month from a different angle. Both of my grades must incorporate persuasive techniques in their product.
I have scoring guides for each of these projects if you'd like to borrow some of my ideas. You can email me personally (preferable) or through the LIST. Subject: Re: [LIT] taking stock I am wondering what teachers are planning for research projects in middle school. What has worked well for you? We are looking for creative ways to engage the students and cover the standards in research. Tying in technology seems to motivate our students here. Please share what you plan and what has worked well. Thanks.
