You can try turning off Rendezvous in the Directory Access
Utility (in /Applications/Utilities), Services pane (OS10.3).
Apple tech support (level 2, and annoyed that level 1 sent
me up to level 2 :-) ) assured me that was the only way of
turning off Rendezvous using gui functionalities, and they
wouldn't help with anything else.  I wanted to eliminate
all the Rendezvous network chatter.
