Hi Ricardo!

Yes, that's right!
I advise you to make your tests on it.
Remenber, don't upgrade... (only if strickly necessary)

Do you actually have a more recent

I'm working on it, not ready to deploy (only has a few installed desktop apps)
For sure I can only garantee to make available for you at the end of this month!
Is this ok for you?

As far as I can tell that should fit in our time line. We should still
have enough time to try to turn the VM into a LiveDVD for Foss4g.

And if not, how hard would it be to create a desktop
version from your current server version?

Hmm it is possible but I prefer to build a desktop version from scratch.
It lacks several components that you will need to install by hand.

I have an update version of GISVM Server almost ready to upload. (just needs
some clean and compress actions)
In a few days (probably this weekend) you can download it...

So I suppose you are the one that have been working on Arramagong, right?!

Yep, I worked on it, though I was not the only one.

You have done a good job on it,

Thanks! I was actually quite impressed by your VM. :-)

I will appreciate your recomendations and contribuitions to improve GISVM.

I generated today an ISO-image from your VM and things went actually
quite smoothly. :-D However, I came across a few things that would make
my life easier, but are not essential for the functionality of your VM:

On the desktop version of the VM you had installed most of the
applications into the home folder of the user. Since home gets loaded
completely into the memory, when you boot from a DVD, this has quite an
impact on the performance and memory requirements. Is it possible for
you to install the apps somewhere else or am I too late with this request?

Can you increase the size of the HD? It's a bit too small for generating
the ISO.

Are you actually planning on putting sample data and examples for each
application on the VM? We had that partially on the LiveDVD and made it
much more useful for demonstration purposes.

cheers,
stefan

Please keep in touch, I will try to answer asap!

Regards,
Ricardo

Hi Ricardo,

I'm just downloading your latest desktop-version of the GISVM, so I can
try to create an iso-image from it.

Its version number is 2008.11.01. That means it was created November
last year, doesn't it? Do you actually have a more recent
desktop-version? And if not, how hard would it be to create a desktop
version from your current server version?

stefan

Cameron,

I was reading:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/FOSS4G_2009_Press_Release_11

"FOSS4G Live DVD:
LiveDVDs, based on the Xubuntu operating
system and including Geospatial Open Source Software, will be given to
all delegates. Users can boot a Live DVD on their computer and trial
the software without installing or effecting the existing system. "

And it remind me to propose to Live Demo initiative a Free Distribution of
GISVM on the same or different physical DVD to all delegates.
So users would benefit of having one more alternative to run and try FOSS4G!!!

The only thing I ask for is to FOSS4G 2009 support the DVD production costs.
And I would compromise to deliver a GISVM special edition for FOSS4G 2009 (just
like I have done for FOSS4G2008...)

Assunto: Re: [Live-demo] LiveDVD from GISVM?

Cameron,

Thank you for asking…

I wonder whether it would be possible to cut a Live
DVD image from the GISVM virtual machine image?
Well, as far as I know there are a million ways to build a Live CD.
In theory you
can make a Live CD out of any running Linux OS.

Never
thought much about that, but making a Live CD out of a Virtual Machine must
also be possible!
One way has already been proposed by Massimo...

If so, this could be an effective way to share the maintenance of
the LiveDVD and GISVM, and share communities.
Yes, GISVM and
LiveDVD have many things in common.
And I know
some projects that have both distributions: Live CD & Virtual Machine.
Just an example
“IcAROS”: http://aros.sourceforge.net/download.php

Until now,
I really haven’t thought seriously about building a Live CD on the GISVM
project.

Because there are already several similar solutions out there and, I believe, it
must focus on Virtualization. (the future… ;-)

However, I’m
building a completely new GISVM Desktop version, right from scratch.
So we could
join forces and work together.
It would be wonderfull to see FOSS4G programmers involved on making GISVM a
better solution for users.

Is this possible, and what would be involved to make
this happen?

Well, to
make it happen, first I need to know more about Live GIS Disc initiative:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Disc

The first
version I knew about, was Lorenzo’s, Omniverdi Live CD:
http://livecd.ominiverdi.org/
I suppose FOSS4G
2007 and 2008 Live DVD where made out of it.

This year,
for FOSS4G2009, OSGeo and Lisasoft changed it to “Arramagong”
http://www.arramagong.com/

So, Live
DVD is now sponsored by OSGeo and Lisasoft:
http://www.arramagong.com/Arramagong/Sponsors.html

And that's what I know about it.

GISVM is just
an interesting idea that I decided to put online, out of my spare time and
pocket.

At
my current situation, I can’t afford the time and money necessary to enter on a
bigger project.

But I will
gladly consider any proposal, from OSGeo or other, about something concerning
building
together a LiveCD and Virtual Machine for FOSS4G.

Ricardo
