CCing the OSGeo Live DVD email list, as there are other developers who
may wish to add comment.
(Of note, we are still to agree upon the documentation templates and
format requirements for the next LiveDVD release)

I'm currently defining the OSGeo Marketing pipeline [1] in preparation
for a significant marketing focus for OSGeo's FOSS4G [2] conference in
September.
Of particular interest is that we, the OSGeo community, have developed
a "Live DVD" of GeoSpatial Software which has been handed out at
conferences, and which also contains a comprehensive summary
documentation of the major GeoSpatial Open Source applications. (See
attached docs.zip). For the next release, I'm looking to categorise
the different applications, including providing overview diagrams to
help new users learn about OSGeo software fast.
What I think would be very valuable for both the OGC and OSGeo is if
there were matching OGC documentation for each of the OGC standards.
If these documents existed, we could incorporate them in with the
GeoSpatial Open Source documentation on the Live DVD and an online
version of the docs.
The OGC standards page [3] provides a start, with many of the
standards having an "Overview" paragraph. I have also seen some OGC
presentations which provide contextual diagrams which could be built
upon.
Specifically: The artefacts I think we should have are:
Standards Context Diagrams:
===================
* Probably 4 or 5 context diagrams visually demonstrating the
relationship between standards
OGC Standard Overview:
=================
* 1 paragraph
* Can be largely derived from: http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards
(probably targeted as less technical audience)
* Covers
** What does the standard cover
** When would you use the standard
Detailed overview of the standard:
=======================
* 1/2 to 1 page overview
* Provide a diagram showing the standard in context with other standards
* Provide background as to why the standard was developed, including
history. What hole does it fill.
* Provide examples of where the standard is used
* Explain the differences between the different versions of the standard
* What is the reference implementation of the standard
* See Also: Mention other similar standards
* Possibly: Reference list of implementations of the standard (This
will quickly get out of date if not continually maintained)
