Cameron,
Yes, I'm best point of contact for Natural Earth.
Excellent.
So you need two pages?
http://live.osgeo.org/overview/openlayers_overview.html
http://live.osgeo.org/quickstart/openlayers_quickstart.html
The Overview would be very valuable, but the quickstart is targeted at
applications rather than datasets, so I suggest Quickstart is not required.
Of note, the template we have provided is targeted at applications, and
may need to be adjusted in places for a dataset description.
I've created a new line item in our status spreadsheet for
"naturalearth". As you go through the process of getting naturalearth
included, it would be good if you could update this spreadsheet (you can
start by adding your name down as a contact):
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Al9zh8DjmU_RdGIzd0VLLTBpQVJuNVlHMlBWSDhKLXc&hl=en_GB#gid=8
If you have any questions, please ask.
The overview page should be easy. The quickstart I'm a little less
clear on. Is this needed? Or something that just walks someone thru
adding a couple layers to QGIS?
What is your deadline? Hopefully after the holidays...
We'd like Overviews complete by 24 January 2011, but if you can complete
sooner, than would be better, in order to give volunteers time to review
and translate. There are more details about the next release, including
schedule in our last press release here:

Hello Nathan,
I understand from this email thread below that you would be the best point
of contact for the NaturalEarth dataset?
I'd like to help promote NaturalEarth through the OSGeo Live DVD, which is
handed out at Geospatial conferences around the world, and with the next
release, is expected to be getting translated into multiple languages
(currently 6).
We have included some of the datasets on the LiveDVD and we are encouraging
the 40 applications packaged on the DVD to make use of these datasets.
What would be really helpful would be if you (or someone else at
NaturalEarth), could create and then maintain a one page marketing document
for NaturalEarth which we can include on the DVD.
You can see what such pages should look like by looking at the application
overviews linked from here:
http://live.osgeo.org/overview/overview.html
The process for creating a document is described here:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Add_Project#Application_Overview
Nathan,
I'm interested to hear your thoughts.

Hi All-
At the just-over Where 2.0 OSGeo booth, Mr. Nathan Vaughn Kelso stopped
by
from the Washington Post. He and others are behind the cartographically
lovely Natural Earth data set. The Natural Earth team I think they are
pretty happy with the results, and have received critical acclaim...
http://www.naturalearthdata.com/
So Mr. Kelso inquired if and how we, OSGeo would like to host or promote
the set... Apparently a minimal set of all vector, plus two basic raster,
is
around 670 mb. (the whole set of rasters brings it up to 4-6 GB ?)
seems like a great fit to me... Ideas ?
best regards
-Brian
