All,
I've been discussing including Rasdaman on the OSGeo-Live DVD with Peter
the project lead.
I think it will be a valuable contribution, addressing raster processing.
Others may be interested to comment on whether it should be included, or
offer to help Peter get it packaged.

no problem, that's fine with me, Cameron.

Yes, I think that covering both remote and local in your demo would
be a good idea.
Do you mind if I cc this email to the osgeo-live list?

Cameron,
I am on my way back to Europe, just between flights. I could come
back to you on this next week when I will be in office again.
Briefly said, we could split our EarthLook demo (www.earthlook.org)
in a local part and a remote part, linking into online EarthLook.
This way it remains interesting - realistic raster data, after all,
are large.

Peter,
Over the next couple of days, I'm keen to make a decision about
whether we include Rasdaman onto OSGeo-Live or not.
As Rasdaman will be a new application, it will require more time to
package, test, and review documentation than other applications.
If you are agreeable, and think you will be able to work to the
proposed schedule, I'd like to move this conversation over to the
OSGeo-Live public list where we can discuss details about what is
packaged, how much space it uses, etc. (You will possibly also
attract a volunteer or 2 to help you with the packaging).

Peter,
Yes, I agree that 25 MB is about all we can fit on the DVD - we
are running out of space on our distribution. Will the browser
based demo work without connecting to the internet? (which is our
aim for all demos).
Of note, probably the most valuable part of being involved in
osgeolive is the one page marketing document which you would be
expected to write, and which many people make use of. (It is being
translated into 6 languages at the moment)
With regards to schedule, to meet the 4.5 release, you will need
to have everything ready by 31 Jan 2011 (our feature freeze date).
Is that achievable?

Cameron-
thanks for the invitation! I have skimmed over it, and one issue
is the work required to make it downloadable (I had thought that
the DVD really is a burnt image); have to check with the agenda
for the next 4 months. But the major issue is that the demo which
I find nice :) , and we have straight on hand, is -hm- large: 85
GB. This is the demo available at www.earthlook.org. While we
might cut it down a little bit it is the n-D capability which
makes it stand out, so any cut would net trim down substantially.
Now I understand that this is at least one order of magnitude
above what you can reasonably put on the Live repo. The next best
thing is a standard demo which uses small, non-georeferenced
imagery (actually not geo imagery, but suited to show QL
functionality - see example attached). All the examples in the
rasdaman ql guide rely on them, and we could set up a
browser-based interface for playing with it. Would that be of
interest? Footprint ~ 25 MB including stripped binaries.

Peter,
I'd like to recommend Rasdaman be included in the next release
of OSGeo-Live, which I personally feel is one of the most
valuable marketing tools of OSGeo (and why I'm involved in it).
But before doing so, I'd like to determine whether you have
sufficient time to commit to getting Rasdaman ready for release.
The process for packaging is described here:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Add_Project
Can you please scan over it these pages, and tell me if you are
able to create the required packaging and documentation in line
with the schedule below ...
