Alan, Cameron, I am willing to help out with updating the install script, or rather the package. I'd prefer doing this in the debian git repository (in a seperate branch), so changes would be available for a future debian package as well (hence debian gis in cc:). This being said: it's a complicated package (different mapscript bindings), and since it's a server package quality should be good, so help (even if it is only reviewing) would certainly be appreciated.

Certainly not a reason to postpone updating the package.
