Hi Cameron:
Pablo and I were working with the 5.0 release on an 8GB USB stick, with a persistent partition defined when we created the LiveUSB. In this case, sometimes when shutting down we got that error. It seems to be caused by some delay in file system syncing, or some such issue. That led to corrupt directories on the next reboot.
It doesn't happen on the LiveDVD (obviously-syncing open files is irelevant)
If this also appears, as Pablo suggests, on an *installed* system, then we do indeed have a problem.

I just got the 5.5 beta. I'll try to run the same procedure that we were using previously, and see what happens.

Thanks,
Micha

Pablo,
Thanks for your feedback and investigation. You seem to have uncovered a bug we haven't heard of before.

The fixes you point to refer to providing a manual fix which a user can apply. Do you know if this fix can be applied during our build process?

Would you mind writing a bug report for us, copying the information you have provided below, and email us the URL of the bug once finished. http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Disc#Issue_Tracker

In particular, please describe the steps you have followed to create the bug, so someone else can reproduce it, or verify that it has been fixed. Are you running from the DVD, or an ISO, or installing into VM, or did you install to to a computer?

(This bug might be fixed by one of the periodic security/bug fix updates provided by Ubuntu/Xubuntu).

Anyway, feel free to send the message to the OSGeo list. I'll register my e-mail adress there.

Thanks for the feedback Pablo,
Do you mind if I CC my response to the osgeo-live email list?

It sounds like you are describing a known bug, which I think that Hamish had identified, and created a work around for.

Dear Cameron Shorter,

I have installed the OSGeo-Live 5.0, at least for the third time. It functions well for some time, but when I shut down the system it gives an error message... that says something like 'can't shut down because the root is idle'. Anyway, after 20 seconds, it shut down. But when the system is turned-on again it is desconfigured. For example, I can't manage the workspaces anymore, when I open a software it's impossible to manage windows size (and the window size is very small) and many other things.

I tried to found some information in the net, without any luck. Did hear about this bug ? There are any solution ?

Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
pablo
