Hi Vaclav,
I'm not sure what should or should not be done yet.
With regards to replacing "user" with "<username>" in the creation
script(s), that sounds like a good idea, but would need to be tested
quite extensively to make sure it doesn't break anything.
If you have the time and commitment to do the testing, then I expect
you'd get the backing to put it in place.
(Angelos will likely be a better guide on this point).
With regards to you feeling a lack on knowledge on VCL, that is a fair
call. But I wouldn't want that to discourage you from doing the research
if you have an interest in this. By the nature of OSGeo-Live crossing so
many projects, we are almost always learning new technologies and
reaching out to new communities looking for advice.
If you wish to join us and help investigate VCL then we'd welcome your
help.
Warm regards,
Cameron

Probably at least update or extend:

The issue is that I don't know what should be changed. Do you want me
to write a script which replaces 'user' by given user name and which
can be called during user account creation?
And if you have a reliable process you are prepared to maintain
long term, then maybe update or create a new Quickstart:
http://live.osgeo.org/en/quickstart/virtualization_quickstart.html
Sorry, I'm not really involved in the process and I don't know how VCL
works in general. If you think that the pages you link are related,
you probably know much more then I do, I just suppose that there is
some virtualization.
These review pages might also be worth looking at:

If you think they need updating then lets talk about it on this list.
I will review this material.
Best,
Vaclav
