Dow Up 552 Points After 900-Point Swing
In a wild day on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial
average ended up 552.59 points, or 6.6 percent, after the Dow
swung almost 900 points.
At one time, the Dow had fallen below 8,000, after the Labor
Department reported that the number of newly laid-off
individuals seeking unemployment benefits jumped last week to
a level not seen since just after the terrorist attacks on
Sept. 11, 2001.
Shares seemed headed for their fourth consecutive decline

exchanges sharply higher. At the close the broader Standard &
Poor's 500-stock index rose 6.9 percent.
