More info from VOAD:
Disaster Assistance Update: 01|30|09, 8:00 pm Arkansas has sustained one of the worst winter storms in the State's history. Nine deaths have resulted with more than 500,000 residents being without power at one point during the storm. Currently more than 200,000 persons have no electricity and more than 5,000 persons are living in 69 shelters across the northern half of the state. In places where the power companies are able to get the electricity back on new challenges of old breaker boxes and non-standard wiring are causing customers to continue to be without lights. The shelters in many places have exceeded their capacities and are running out of resources. The Arkansas Rice Depot and Foodbank Network have made significant strides is attempting to move food to the places across our State. UMCOR has sent funding to assist in our recovery and volunteers are calling from across the jurisdiction to assist where needed. If you can help then please contact Maxine Allen at either [email protected] or toll-free at 877.656.1816. Thanks again for all the calls, emails and offers of help. ------------------------ Doug Brown, MSc, CHEP, NREMT-B Emergency Management Coordinator Arkansas Children's Hospital Region 6 Vice-President International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM USA) Sent via BlackBerry From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Cc: [email protected] Sent: Fri Jan 30 17:11:24 2009 Subject: [DailyBrief] Latest Arkansas SITREP Thanks for all the emails and phone calls and offers for assistance I have forwarded those up the line.
