Update: California legislature adjourns without resolving budget, to
resume Tuesday
In a previous update it was reported that Gov. Schwarzenegger was
preparing to lay off 20,000 state workers. That number has been revised
to 10,000.
The California Senate and Assembly have adjourned for the night and
scheduled floor sessions for Tuesday morning, when they will debate the
state budget proposal.

Further information:
-- In an apparent effort to increase pressure on lawmakers negotiating
an end to California's fiscal crisis, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is
preparing to send pink slips to 10,000 state workers.
-- The administration announced today it will shut down the final 276
public works projects that had been allowed to continue operating
during the state's cash crisis.
-- Despite intense negotiations since Saturday, Schwarzenegger and the
Senate Democratic majority have been unable to secure a third
Republican vote for a plan that includes more than $14 billion in new
taxes.
