Los Angeles Times | March 05, 2009 | 12.18 a.m. PT L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa headed for reelection
--- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa established a solid lead over his nine challengers Tuesday, looking to avoid a May 19 runoff election while seeing two of his closest allies pull ahead in their contests for citywide office, according to early returns. With about one-fifth of the votes counted, Villaraigosa was well-postioned to avoid a runoff. He had been expected to secure the needed majority, given that he had appeared in television commercials for himself and two other campaigns -- and had outspent his top opponent, attorney Walter Moore, by a ratio of 15 to 1. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- California and the world: Visit http://link.latimes.com/r/NAT6JL/V8OAR/JF9Y6C/0W3R/QFTDFJ/N9/t for up to the minute news.
