Los Angeles Times | March 5, 2009 | 1:18 p.m. PT --- California Supreme Court signals mixed response to Proposition 8 The California Supreme Court, in considering legal challenges to the gay-marriage ban, appeared ready today to vote to uphold Proposition 8, but also seemed willing to decide unanimously to recognize existing same-sex marriages. The hearing, on a damp, chilly morning in San Francisco, drew a crowd of several hundred people outside the court building, many of them carrying signs for or against Proposition 8. If the court upholds the measure, it also must decide the fate of an estimated 18,000 same-sex marriages that took place before voters reinstated a marriage ban in November.
