Seventeen people are still missing in the icy North Atlantic off of
Newfoundland, following the crash of a helicopter that was carrying
offshore oil workers. The chopper was initially spotted floating upside
down, but has now sunk. Two life-rafts found were empty. Two Cormorant
helicopters, a C-130 aircraft and an Aurora fixed-wing plane are still
searching for survivors, along with two surface ships. The chopper went
down about 65 kilometres southeast of St. John's, at about 9:18 a.m.
local time or 7:48 a.m. ET
