On another subject, I have recently constructed a 5 gallon water heater from parts off a rusted out Seaward 6 gallon unit I found in the trash at the marina. I installed the heater element, Thermostat, and over-Amperage breaker on the new tank. The tank already has a pressure relief valve and a cold water check valve. I have tested it and it works well. It heats 5 gallons with a 1500 watt element in about 45-60 minutes. I used a 5 gallon high grade (seems at least 316 series) stainless tank. I bought 4 such tanks on ebay for 8 dollars apiece, they are restaurant surplus soda machine pressure tanks rated to 150 psi. The tank doesn't have an engine heat function but I might add a circulating tube at some point to take heat from the engine coolant. I've also toyed with the idea of installing a propane function but to get such a system that is automatically controlled and ignition protected would be next to impossible.
I will use polyurethane insulation and fill/fair this with 2 part foam. I used 8lb/cuft 2 part polyurethane foam for fairing in my icebox renovation because it is hard enough to sand and very stiff when glassed. (I got the foam from USComposites.com- they sell carbon, Kevlar, glass and foam) The tank will have a fiberglass shell over the insulation. I have seen the standard aluminum tanks corrode very badly and wanted to get away from aluminum in my water system if possible for that reason. Vern, do we have a place to post pictures? I would like to post some of the tank. -Merrill
