The water heater is 5 gallons. I took parts off a Seaward 6 gallon
heater that I found in the trash and installed them on the new tank.
The tank is stainless steel, formerly a restaurant style soft drink
pressurized tank. I wrapped the tank with 2 layers of polyurethane
foam, covered the foam with fiberglass, and when it is done it will have
an on/off lighted switch and hinged fiberglass hatches where the hoses
and electronics are.

It fits perfectly in my bilge over the keel in what would otherwise be
wasted space- this is an improvement since the old tank was formerly in
a space that was almost impossible to get to. It performs well, draws
10 amps, has about a 30 minute recovery time, and allows for about 3/4
of a shower before the water starts going from hot to warm- this is fine
for our needs. The only problem I have with a 1200 watt appliance is
that I have about 4 other 1200 watt appliances on the shore power 1
circuit so I have to be careful about how many of these are on at the
same time. eventually I will place the circuit on the other shore power
2 circuit which is much less heavily wired.

I will take pictures at some point. I hope to be able to post them on
our new wiki when it is complete.

Could you describe your home built water heater?
