It's hard to say for sure what would cause it. I could be that your mailbox was full, your provider could have been having DNS problems, or their could have been a problem where the internet connection between my provider and your provider could have been having problems.
Since it's your own domain I am guessing you are running your own mail server too? If so did you see any error messages on your mail server? I just wonder if the messages hit your server or not. Anyway I wouldn't worry about it too much but if you see it happen again we will have to do more investigation.
